Caesar's Death
Caesar's death was one of betrayal. On the Ides Of March 15 of 44 BC, Caesar was due to appear at a session of the Senate. Mark Antony having just learned of the meeting the night before from Casca, and fearing the worst, went to head Caesar off. The conspirators had anticipated this and, fearing that Antony would come to Caesar's aid, had arranged for Trebonius to intercept him just as he approached the entrance of the Senate house, where the session was to be held, and hold him outside. Cimber had requested of Caesar to take his brother out of exile but of course, Caesar refused. The other conspirators gathered round agreeing with Cimber and offering support. At the same time, Casca was behind Caesar and was told to make the first blow. As Casca was about to strike, Caesar caught the knife and was shocked. Casca, being frightened, yelled for help and within moments, the rest of the conspirators started taking blows at Caesar, including his closest friend, Brutus. Caesar was stabbed 23 times at the statue of Pompey.
