Caesar's Political Career
In 60 BC, Caesar sought election as consul for 59 BC, along with two other candidates. This election was full of treachery and people were accepting bribes from Caesar's opponents. Caesar still won this however along with his friend, Marcus Bibulus. After Caesar was elected consul, he formed an informal alliance with Pompey and Crassus. They each had enough money and political influence to control public businesses so they decided to rule together. This group was known as the First Triumvirate which meant "rule of three men". Around 59 BC, Caesar met a woman named Calpurnia and within a couple months, they were married.
The First Triumvirate made many changes to Rome. Both good and bad. The first proposal was brought up by Pompey and supported by both Crassus and Caesar. It called for redistribution of public lands to the poor and the city to be filled with soldiers. This action upset the triumvirate's enemies and Bibulus called this action a bad omen. Caesar was then attacked and took refuge in his home for about a year. After Caesar's consulship ended, Caesar avoided anyone who could prosecute him for his actions and fled for his province.
